Residents of Mauaima in Prayagraj were left horrified after police uncovered that a 20-year-old youth’s sister-in-law was responsible for a gruesome attack that mutilated his private parts, turning what seemed like a mysterious crime into a shocking case of revenge rooted in family conflict.
The incident occurred on October 16, when Umesh, the son of Ram Asare from Malkhanpur village, was discovered in his room covered in blood and screaming in pain. His family members rushed to his aid and found that he had suffered multiple stab wounds, with his private parts severed. He was immediately taken to the hospital while police were alerted. Initially, an FIR was filed against an unknown assailant, as no one in the household could understand who might have committed such a brutal act.
As the investigation progressed, police began piecing together the events leading up to the attack. Umesh’s elder brother, Uday, is married to Manju, who lives in the same house. Over time, Umesh reportedly developed a close relationship with Manju’s younger sister, and the two allegedly planned to marry. However, when the family learned of the relationship, they strongly objected, citing cultural and familial boundaries. Under family pressure, Umesh distanced himself and later expressed interest in another woman.
This decision reportedly caused deep emotional distress to Manju’s younger sister, who fell into depression. Enraged by the pain her sister endured, Manju allegedly began harboring resentment and anger toward Umesh, blaming him for her sister’s suffering. Investigators believe this emotional turmoil ultimately pushed her to plan a violent act of vengeance.
On the night of the attack, police said, Manju waited until everyone in the household was asleep. Around midnight, she allegedly entered Umesh’s room armed with a kitchen knife. In a fit of rage, she stabbed him multiple times before severing his private parts. Umesh’s cries woke up the family, but by the time they reached the room, Manju had already fled into the darkness.
Following the attack, a team of doctors led by Dr. Girish Mishra performed an emergency surgery lasting over 90 minutes, managing to save Umesh’s life. Dr. Mishra later confirmed that the victim is now out of danger, though he faces a long recovery period of several months due to the extent of his injuries.
As police intensified the investigation, inconsistencies in Manju’s statements raised suspicion. According to ACP Vivek Kumar Yadav, “The probe established that the sister-in-law was directly involved in the assault. Her anger over her brother-in-law ending his relationship with her younger sister was the primary motive.”
Police have since launched a manhunt to trace Manju, who has been absconding since the incident. Officers continue to monitor nearby areas, believing she may still be hiding within the district.
The shocking nature of the case has left the local community in disbelief, with many calling it one of the most disturbing crimes the area has witnessed in years. Residents have expressed both sympathy for the victim and shock at the emotional intensity that led to such a horrific act within a family.
Investigators have confirmed that the case remains under active investigation, and additional charges will be filed once Manju is apprehended and formally interrogated.
