An Odisha guy was detained for pretending to be a Maoist and threatening to demand Rs 35 lakh from his father

In Odisha’s Kalahandi district, a bizarre case of deception and extortion has emerged, involving a young man who allegedly staged a fake Maoist threat against his own family to obtain money. Police said the accused, the son of a local contractor, was arrested after he admitted to fabricating a letter that demanded Rs 35 lakh from his father under the guise of a Maoist group.

The incident occurred in the Rupra Road area under Narla police limits. According to investigators, the youth crafted a handwritten letter claiming to be from Maoists and warning his father that the entire family would be killed if the ransom was not paid. The letter was intended to terrify his family and coerce his father into parting with the money.

However, the father became suspicious of the circumstances and approached the Narla police station to report the threat. Officers immediately launched an inquiry and soon uncovered inconsistencies in the letter and its delivery. After tracing clues and questioning suspects, police discovered that the so-called Maoist letter had, in fact, originated from within the household itself.

During interrogation, the accused eventually broke down and confessed to writing the fake threat letter himself. He reportedly told police that he had planned the extortion to extract money from his father without arousing suspicion, believing that invoking the Maoist name would make the threat seem credible.

Police said they received the initial complaint on October 7 and quickly moved to verify its authenticity. “During the investigation, we detained a suspect who later confessed to the act. It was then revealed that the accused was the victim’s own son,” said a senior officer from the Kalahandi police.

The youth has since been arrested and produced before a local court. Authorities have described the case as a “family-centered extortion attempt driven by greed,” noting that further investigation is underway to determine whether anyone else was aware of or involved in the plot.
