The tragic Karur stampede, which took place last Saturday during a rally organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay, has left 41 people dead and more than 60 others injured. The devastating incident has not only shaken Tamil Nadu but has also prompted heightened scrutiny of online content related to the tragedy. Authorities have intensified their monitoring of social media platforms, concerned about the spread of misinformation that could further inflame public sentiment or disrupt peace.
In the wake of this, Chennai Cyber Crime Police detained YouTuber Mari Das for questioning after accusations surfaced that he had circulated false information about the stampede. Police officials clarified that Mari Das was not arrested but only taken in for inquiry before being released. Earlier media reports had incorrectly claimed that he had been formally arrested in Neelankarai, Chennai. According to police sources, the investigation was part of a larger crackdown on digital misinformation surrounding the incident.
Just a day earlier, another well-known YouTuber, Felix Gerald — who runs the popular RedPix channel — was arrested by Cyber Crime authorities for allegedly posting misleading and provocative content about the Karur tragedy. Law enforcement officials emphasised that such misinformation not only distorts facts but also has the potential to trigger unrest and deepen public distress. In response to the growing concerns, the Chennai Police have registered cases against 25 individuals accused of spreading inflammatory material related to the stampede through various online platforms.
The Karur tragedy occurred during a major political rally organised by the TVK party, which recently gained significant attention due to Vijay’s entry into politics. The large crowd and inadequate crowd management reportedly led to chaos and panic, culminating in the deadly stampede. Following the incident, the Madras High Court expressed severe criticism of the event organisers and the party leadership for their handling of the gathering. The court stated that such negligence was unacceptable, especially when human lives were at stake.
In response, the Tamil Nadu government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior IPS officer Asra Garg to conduct a comprehensive probe into the causes and accountability behind the disaster. The SIT has been instructed to seize CCTV footage, examine Vijay’s campaign bus, and collect witness statements to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the catastrophe.
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has issued strict directives to prevent such tragedies in the future. The court ordered that public gatherings should not be held near highways or in congested areas and directed the state government to draft new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for political and large-scale public events. Until these new safety protocols are finalised, the Tamil Nadu government has suspended all political rallies across the state.
The Karur incident has reignited debates about public safety at political gatherings, the responsibilities of organisers, and the growing challenge of managing misinformation in the digital era. As investigations continue, the focus remains on justice for the victims and accountability for those responsible for both the tragedy and the misinformation that followed.
