China claims the US launched a cyberattack at the national time center, stealing secrets

The Chinese ministry warned that such intrusions could have had severe consequences, potentially affecting critical infrastructure, including financial transactions, electricity grids, and communication networks that rely on precise timing signals.

Officials emphasized that the National Time Center plays a crucial role in coordinating China’s technological and scientific activities, including satellite navigation, telecommunications, and national defense systems. Any disruption could ripple across multiple sectors, they noted.

Cybersecurity experts observing the claims said that if accurate, the alleged operations reflect sophisticated long-term espionage techniques, combining mobile device exploitation with network penetration to gather sensitive operational data.

The accusations have added to growing geopolitical tensions, with both nations previously imposing sanctions, indictments, and trade restrictions linked to cybersecurity and intellectual property theft. Analysts suggest the episode could accelerate China’s efforts to harden its critical infrastructure and reduce dependence on foreign technologies.

While the US has not officially responded, the report is likely to further complicate ongoing dialogues on cyber norms, international espionage, and global supply chain security between the two countries.
