A massive fire broke out on Saturday at the multi-storey Brahmaputra Apartments located on BD Marg in Delhi, a residential complex that accommodates several Members of Parliament from the Rajya Sabha. The blaze, which originated on one of the upper floors, caused widespread panic among residents as thick smoke engulfed the building. Fire engines were immediately dispatched to the site, though the exact cause of the incident remains undetermined.
Brahmaputra Apartments, situated barely 200 meters from the Parliament House, is one of the key government residential complexes inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020. The building serves as an official accommodation for Rajya Sabha MPs and is considered a high-security zone due to its proximity to major government establishments.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as residents evacuated the premises while fire and rescue personnel worked swiftly to control the flames. Despite the rapid response later, initial reports suggested a delay in the arrival of fire tenders, which led to mounting concern and frustration among occupants.
Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale highlighted the situation on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), expressing outrage over what he described as a “shocking absence” of emergency response. “HUGE FIRE at Brahmaputra Apartments at BD Marg in Delhi. All residents are Rajya Sabha MPs. The building is 200 meters from Parliament. NO FIRE BRIGADE SINCE 30 minutes. The fire is still burning and rising. Fire engines are missing despite repeated calls. Have some shame, Delhi Government,” he wrote.
Authorities are currently investigating the source of the fire and assessing the extent of damage. No official reports of casualties or injuries have been released yet, but residents have demanded a thorough probe into the delayed emergency response and the safety protocols in place at high-security government residential complexes.
