At least eight pilgrims lost their lives in a tragic accident at Chandshali Ghat in Nandurbar district, Maharashtra, on Saturday after a bus carrying devotees plunged into a deep ravine. The victims were returning from the revered Astamba Devi temple when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle on the steep and winding ghat section.
Police said the accident occurred when the bus, filled with returning pilgrims, veered off the narrow road and tumbled into the valley below. The force of the crash was so strong that several passengers were thrown out of the vehicle, which was left completely wrecked.
Emergency teams, including local police and medical personnel, rushed to the site and began rescue operations. The injured were transported to Taloda Sub-District Hospital, while those with critical injuries were referred to the district hospital for further treatment. Authorities confirmed that several passengers remain hospitalized, with some in serious condition.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered and sent for post-mortem examinations before being handed over to their families. Police officials have registered a case and launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, with preliminary findings suggesting that the steep gradient and poor road conditions contributed to the mishap.
The Astamba Devi temple, where the pilgrims had been visiting, is an important spiritual site, particularly for members of the tribal community in the region. The temple attracts thousands of devotees each year, especially during festive seasons, leading to heavy traffic on the narrow ghat roads.
Chandshali Ghat, the site of the tragedy, is widely regarded as one of the most perilous routes in the district due to its sharp curves and steep drop-offs. Locals have repeatedly urged authorities to improve road safety measures and install proper barriers along the route to prevent such recurring accidents.
Officials from the district administration have announced ex gratia compensation for the families of the deceased and assured that safety audits will be conducted on the ghat roads to prevent further loss of life.
