The Indian Navy is preparing to commission its third Survey Vessel, Ikshak, a significant addition that embodies over 80 percent indigenous content and state-of-the-art dual-role functionalities. The commissioning ceremony of Ikshak will take place at the Naval Base in Kochi on November 6, 2025, marking the formal induction of the third ship in the Survey Vessel (Large) class. The event will be presided over by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff. This momentous occasion not only strengthens India’s naval infrastructure but also underscores the country’s rising capability in indigenous shipbuilding and maritime innovation.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, Kolkata, under the supervision of the Directorate of Ship Production and the Warship Overseeing Team (Kolkata), Ikshak incorporates more than 80 percent locally sourced components. The vessel represents the success of close collaboration between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This partnership showcases the growing synergy between India’s defense sector and domestic industries, paving the way for future advancements in indigenous naval engineering.
Ikshak’s dual-role capability sets it apart from traditional survey ships. In addition to conducting hydrographic survey operations, it can function as a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) platform or as a hospital ship during emergencies.
