Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday declared that India is nearing the complete eradication of Naxal-Maoist terrorism, crediting the security forces for freeing over 100 districts from extremist influence in the last decade. Speaking aboard the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant off the Goa coast, Modi said that the success against left-wing extremism marks a historic milestone in India’s internal security efforts.
He noted that before 2014, around 125 districts across the country were affected by Maoist violence, but sustained security operations and development initiatives have reduced that number dramatically. “It is due to the valour and courage of our security forces that the country has achieved another major milestone. The country is now on the verge of liberation from Naxal-Maoist terror,” the Prime Minister said.
According to Modi, the number of affected districts has dropped to just 11, and of these, only three still have a notable Maoist presence. “More than 100 districts are now free from Maoist terror and are breathing in open air for the first time. This year, they will celebrate Diwali with pride and dignity,” he said.
He contrasted the transformation in these regions, recalling how Maoists once destroyed schools, hospitals, and roads to hinder development. “There was a time when Maoists did not allow the construction of schools, roads, or hospitals. They blew up these institutions and targeted doctors and teachers. Today, highways are being built, businesses are emerging, and new schools and hospitals are creating a better future for children,” he added.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the progress was made possible through the sacrifice and resilience of India’s security personnel who fought tirelessly to reclaim affected areas. “These achievements reflect the penance, sacrifice, and courage of our brave forces,” he said.
Modi concluded his address by expressing satisfaction that for the first time, residents of many such districts—once known for insurgency—will be able to celebrate Diwali peacefully and with self-respect.
