Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the initial phase of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, expressing optimism that the measures would bring immediate relief to the people of the conflict-ridden Palestinian enclave. In a statement shared on X, Modi highlighted the agreement between Israel and Hamas to release hostages and prisoners, describing it as “a reflection of the strong leadership of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.” He expressed hope that the humanitarian measures, coupled with the release of detainees, would contribute to easing suffering in Gaza and set the stage for a durable peace.
The announcement followed Trump’s declaration that Israel and Hamas had agreed to implement the first phase of his peace plan, which includes a comprehensive exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners within 72 hours. Under the agreement, all living Israeli hostages would be swapped for nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees. Trump, posting on Truth Social, described the development as a historic step toward a “strong, durable, and everlasting peace,” noting that Israel would withdraw its troops to a mutually agreed line as part of the initial phase. He praised the role of mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the breakthrough and calling it a moment of blessing for peacemakers.
The agreement comes nearly two years after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack, marking the second anniversary of the event, and follows indirect talks held in Egypt that facilitated the breakthrough. The negotiations saw active involvement from Trump’s representatives, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, while Israel was represented by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a close ally of Prime Minister Netanyahu. The Prime Minister’s statement underscores India’s support for initiatives aimed at humanitarian relief and the restoration of peace in Gaza.
