This Diwali, PMO might move for the first time since independence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to move into the new Executive Enclave under the Central Vista Redevelopment Project on or soon after Diwali, marking the relocation of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) from South Block, where it has been since India’s independence in 1947. The new PMO will occupy “Sewa Tirath-1,” one of three new buildings in Executive Enclave-I, with Sewa Tirath-2 and Sewa Tirath-3 housing the Cabinet Secretariat and the National Security Advisor’s Office. Operations in the new complex have already begun, as indicated by a high-level meeting held on October 14 with senior defence officials.

The move is part of the broader Central Vista Redevelopment Project, which aims to modernize and reorganize Delhi’s central administrative zone along the 3-km stretch of Rajpath, now renamed Kartavya Path. The historic South and North Block buildings are slated to be converted into museums under the ‘Yuga Yugin Bharat Sangrahalaya’ initiative, with support from France’s Museum Development Agency, to display India’s political and cultural history.

The government has cited limitations of the colonial-era South Block, such as inadequate space, poor ventilation, and lack of natural light, as reasons for the shift. The redevelopment also includes new Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings, such as Kartavya Bhawan, to consolidate ministries previously spread across Delhi. Three additional CCS buildings are ready for occupancy, and the government plans automated people movers to connect key buildings and reduce congestion.

The Executive Enclave relocation ends the PMO’s 78-year presence in South Block, symbolizing both an administrative modernization and a historic transition for India’s central governance infrastructure. The Central Vista project, including the Prime Minister’s new residence, is targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
