Two people were killed in the Manchester synagogue attack, which UK police have termed a terrorist event

British authorities have officially classified the attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in north Manchester on Yom Kippur as a terrorist incident. The assault, which occurred around 9:30 am, involved a man ramming a car into pedestrians before stabbing a security guard at the synagogue gates. Armed officers intervened within minutes, shooting the suspected attacker, who is believed to have died. Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene due to “suspicious items” found on the suspect, delaying confirmation of his death.

Two people lost their lives in the attack, while initially four were reported injured. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) indicated they have strong leads regarding the attacker’s identity, and counterterrorism teams are now leading the investigation, coordinating with forensic experts to determine his motives and whether he acted alone. Synagogues and Jewish centers across the UK have been placed under heightened security as a precaution.

The assault on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, has sent shockwaves through Britain’s Jewish community. The Israeli Embassy in London condemned the attack as “abhorrent and deeply distressing.” London Mayor Sadiq Khan described the incident as “incredibly worrying” and announced increased police patrols outside synagogues.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who cut short a foreign trip to chair an emergency COBRA meeting, called the attack “horrific” and praised emergency responders for their swift actions. King Charles expressed that he was “deeply shocked and saddened,” while Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham urged calm, noting that the immediate danger appears to be over and advising the public to avoid the area.

The North West Ambulance Service had declared a major incident, deploying armored paramedics to the scene to assist victims. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the circumstances of the attack and ensure the safety of religious communities nationwide.
