Former Punjab Director General of Police (Human Rights) Mohammad Mustafa has firmly denied allegations of foul play and physical torture surrounding the death of his son, Akeel Akhtar, whose body was discovered under mysterious circumstances in August. The case has taken a complex turn after the emergence of a pre-recorded video in which Akeel leveled grave accusations against his own family members, including his parents and sister.
In the video, Akeel Akhtar, aged 35, alleged that his father, Mohammad Mustafa, was involved in an illicit relationship with his wife. He further claimed that his mother, former Punjab minister and Congress leader Razia Sultana, along with his sister, had conspired either to kill him or to falsely implicate him in a criminal case. The disturbing recording was reportedly handed over to the Panchkula police by their neighbour, Shamshuddin Chaudhary, who also filed a formal complaint demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to Akeel’s death.
Acting on the complaint, Panchkula police registered a case against the members of Akeel’s family. The complainant’s statement prompted immediate procedural action, though Mohammad Mustafa dismissed the move as politically motivated. He described the complainant as a person driven by “dirty thoughts and petty political motives,” suggesting that the allegations were being used to malign his family’s reputation for personal or political gain.
Addressing the media, Mustafa said that as per legal protocol, police are duty-bound to register a First Information Report (FIR) when a written complaint is submitted. “If the police receive a written complaint, it is their obligation to register a case. The Panchkula police have simply fulfilled their duty, and I welcome it,” Mustafa stated, maintaining that he had nothing to hide and was prepared for a transparent inquiry.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to the high-profile background of the individuals involved. Mustafa, a retired Indian Police Service officer, had served in several key positions in Punjab’s law enforcement apparatus, while Razia Sultana has held ministerial roles in the state government. The allegations have not only raised questions about internal family disputes but also about the potential misuse of influence and the role of political rivalries in escalating the controversy.
Police sources have confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway, focusing on verifying the authenticity and timing of Akeel’s video recording, as well as examining the events that preceded his death. Investigators are also reviewing digital evidence and conducting forensic tests to establish whether Akeel’s claims were made voluntarily or under duress.
While the family continues to assert their innocence, the unfolding case has underscored the growing scrutiny on public figures and their private lives, particularly when serious criminal accusations arise. For now, law enforcement authorities have maintained that the investigation will proceed “strictly on the basis of evidence,” without political interference or bias.
