The sustainment support will boost the operational readiness and long-term maintenance of the MH-60R multi-role helicopters, which are technologically advanced and capable of operating in all weather conditions.
The Ministry of Defence announced on Friday that it has signed Letters of Offer and Acceptance (LoAs) with the United States government to provide sustainment support for the Indian Navy’s MH-60R helicopter fleet. The agreement, worth ₹7,995 crore, covers five years and includes follow-on support as well as supply-based assistance. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was present during the signing.
Sustainment support refers to a comprehensive package that ensures the timely supply of essential spare parts and specialised equipment required for routine and emergency maintenance of military platforms. Along with material support, it also includes technical assistance and training for Indian personnel so that operational and maintenance activities can be carried out independently within the country.
According to the Ministry, establishing these sustainment capabilities within India will strengthen long-term self-reliance and reduce dependence on the U.S. government. This initiative supports the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by encouraging the participation of Indian companies and MSMEs in the development of related products and services.
The support package is expected to significantly improve the deployment rate, serviceability, and lifespan of the MH-60R helicopters, which are known for their advanced avionics, all-weather functionality, and anti-submarine warfare capability. It will also facilitate their seamless operation from both naval bases and ships positioned across different regions.
Overall, the agreement is designed to ensure that the helicopters perform optimally across all primary and secondary mission roles while enabling the Indian Navy to operate them more efficiently, flexibly, and sustainably.
