A political controversy erupted in Tamil Nadu after a video surfaced showing DMK South District Secretary Jayapalan allegedly issuing a direct “death threat” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi just days before the PM’s scheduled visit to the state. The remarks, made during a party event, immediately triggered outrage from the BJP, which demanded Jayapalan’s arrest.
The viral clip, shared by BJP MLA Nainar Nagendran, shows Jayapalan comparing the Prime Minister to “another Narakasura” and declaring that “Tamil Nadu will prosper only if Modi is finished off.” He accused the PM of attempting to “steal your votes” and urged DMK supporters to “stand firmly against him,” rhetoric the BJP said was dangerous, undemocratic, and criminally irresponsible.
Nagendran condemned the comments as “disgraceful and deeply disturbing,” arguing that issuing threats against the country’s highest elected office amounted to a breakdown of law and order under the DMK administration. He questioned why senior leaders — including Tenkasi MP Rani Shreekumar and Sankarankovil MLA Raja, who were present at the event — failed to intervene or stop the speech.
In a strongly worded post on X, Nagendran alleged that the video exposed the “violent tendencies and savagery” of the ruling party. He demanded that the state government act swiftly and arrest Jayapalan, especially with the Prime Minister expected to arrive in Tamil Nadu shortly.
As of now, the DMK has not issued an official reaction. Police sources confirmed they are reviewing the footage and determining whether the statements meet the threshold for criminal intimidation or other penal provisions. The controversy is likely to escalate further as the political temperature rises ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.
