A predawn ambush along the India–Myanmar frontier left four Assam Rifles personnel injured on Friday, after terrorists opened fire on a patrolling team in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district. The attack took place near Border Pillar No. 87 in the Saibol village area, a stretch frequently used for routine border patrols. Officials said the troops immediately returned fire but maintained a controlled response to prevent harm to civilians living nearby.
The wounded personnel were swiftly evacuated by air to the military hospital in Leimakhong for treatment. Following the attack, the Defence Ministry confirmed that additional units had been mobilised and that search and area domination operations were underway in the region.
The stretch of the Tengnoupal border remains one of the most vulnerable patches along India’s eastern frontier due to its difficult terrain and porous geography. The zone has seen repeated episodes of militant movement and sporadic violence in recent months, prompting heightened surveillance.
As of now, no insurgent group has claimed responsibility for the ambush. The incident adds to a tense security backdrop in Manipur’s border belt, coming months after an encounter in neighbouring Chandel district in which an Assam Rifles unit, acting on intelligence inputs, killed ten suspected militants during a fierce firefight.
With troops now reinforcing the embattled sector and combing operations underway, authorities remain on high alert to prevent further escalation along the sensitive India–Myanmar border corridor.
