Eindhoven Airport in the Netherlands was closed following several drone sightings

Air operations at Eindhoven Airport in the southern Netherlands were abruptly halted on Saturday evening after several drones were sighted near the facility, prompting an immediate security response. Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans confirmed the shutdown on X, saying that specialised counter-drone units, military teams and police officers were deployed around the airport and stood “ready to intervene” while authorities worked to identify who was operating the drones and from where. Eindhoven Airport, which serves both civilian passengers and Royal Netherlands Air Force activity, suspended all incoming and outgoing flights as a precautionary measure to avoid any risk of collision.

The disruption came just a day after Dutch air-defence forces opened fire on unidentified drones that appeared over the Volkel airbase, located roughly 40 kilometres from Eindhoven. These incidents add to a growing list of recent drone-related disturbances across Europe. Airports in Denmark and Norway experienced similar temporary shutdowns earlier this month due to drone incursions, contributing to wider concerns about aviation security.

NATO members have been on heightened alert following a series of airspace violations involving Russia. Over the past two months, Russian drones have been intercepted over Poland and Romania, and three Russian aircraft briefly entered Estonian airspace—events that Western officials believe may be deliberate attempts to test alliance response times and monitoring capabilities.

Although airports are not legally obligated to shut down for drone sightings, aviation standards prioritise safety over continuity. When drones appear near runways or flight paths, airport authorities often suspend departures and arrivals until the area is deemed safe. This can lead to extensive delays, emergency diversions and logistical complications, but officials emphasise that preventing a mid-air incident remains the overriding priority.
