Heavy rainfall are expected in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra as Cyclone Senyar intensifies

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a depression over the Strait of Malacca and a persisting low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal will jointly influence widespread rainfall across southern and eastern India in the coming days. Both systems are expected to strengthen further, increasing moisture inflow and setting the stage for heavy to very heavy rain through the week. The low-pressure area near south Sri Lanka and the equatorial Indian Ocean is forecast to intensify as it first moves westward and then gradually shifts west-northwestwards.

Satellite imagery shows extensive cloud formations with strong convective activity spreading across the southwest Bay, the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts, Sri Lanka, and the central Bay region. Meteorologists have placed the central pressure at around 1006 hPa, with winds reaching 20–25 knots and gusts up to 35 knots. Sea conditions remain rough to very rough over the Andaman Sea, the Strait of Malacca, and waters surrounding the Nicobar Islands, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. If the system eventually strengthens into a cyclonic storm, it will be named ‘Senyar’, a title contributed by the United Arab Emirates. As per IMD procedure, the name will only be assigned once the system reaches full cyclonic intensity.

Heavy rainfall is expected to prevail over Tamil Nadu from November 25 to 30, with particularly intense spells forecast between November 28 and 30. Kerala and Mahe are also likely to see significant rain on November 25 and 26, while the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will experience a prolonged wet spell between November 25 and 29, including very heavy rainfall on November 26 and 27. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema are forecast to receive heavy to very heavy showers between November 29 and December 1, especially on November 30.

Alongside the rain, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across Tamil Nadu from November 25 to 29 and across Kerala and Mahe from November 25 to 27. Lakshadweep will likely witness thunderstorms on November 25, while thunder and lightning may occur over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema on November 28 and 29. Gusty winds ranging from 30–40 kmph to 50–60 kmph are expected at various times over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between November 25 and 29. The IMD has urged caution across coastal and island regions, noting the possibility of intense rainfall, strong winds, and turbulent sea conditions throughout the week.
