India is close to finalising export agreements worth about USD 450 million for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, signalling a major step forward in its defence export strategy. According to senior government officials, multiple friendly nations are in the final stages of negotiations with New Delhi, and the deals are expected to be signed shortly. Nearly all procedural and financial formalities have been completed, placing India on the verge of one of its biggest-ever defence export breakthroughs.
Interest in the BrahMos system has risen sharply in recent years, especially after its strong operational display during Operation Sindoor. Several countries across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have expressed interest in acquiring the missile. DRDO, in coordination with the Ministry of Defence, continues to pursue new markets and strategic partners, leveraging the missile’s reputation as one of the most reliable and versatile supersonic weapons in service today.
Among the most significant deals currently awaiting closure is India’s proposed BrahMos sale to Indonesia. Defence officials revealed that the negotiations between New Delhi and Jakarta have already been completed, with the contract ready for signature. However, since BrahMos is jointly developed by India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia, the agreement requires final approval from Moscow. Once Russia gives its consent, Indonesia will become one of the latest countries to induct the system, marking an important diplomatic and strategic milestone for India.
The BrahMos missile remains one of India’s highest-value defence exports. Capable of travelling at supersonic speeds and deployable from land-based batteries, naval vessels, and combat aircraft, the missile is prized by militaries seeking rapid-strike precision capability. Its range, speed, and proven accuracy make it particularly attractive in regions facing maritime and territorial security challenges.
If the pending contracts are signed in the coming weeks, India’s total value of BrahMos export commitments will mark a new high, significantly strengthening its position as an emerging global supplier of advanced military technology.
