A Special CBI Court in Hyderabad has ordered former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to personally appear before it by November 21 in connection with the disproportionate assets (DA) case pending against him.
The directive was issued after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a counter on Tuesday opposing Jagan’s petition seeking exemption from personal appearance. Jagan, who is currently on bail in the case, had moved a memo requesting permission to skip the upcoming hearing. The court, however, rejected his plea and made it clear that his physical presence is mandatory before the given date.
The case, which has been under investigation for over a decade, revolves around allegations of quid pro quo investments made during the tenure of Jagan’s late father, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, when he served as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh between 2004 and 2009.
According to the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED), multiple companies and individuals allegedly invested large sums — in some cases at inflated share premiums — into firms associated with Jagan, including Jagathi Publications, Bharathi Cements, and Sandur Power Company. In exchange, they were purportedly granted favorable government decisions, such as land allotments, mining licences, and other official clearances.
The agencies claim these transactions amounted to corruption and money laundering, forming the core of the disproportionate assets case. Jagan has consistently denied wrongdoing, calling the charges politically motivated.
Further hearings in the case are expected later this month, when Jagan is required to make his in-person appearance before the CBI court as directed.
