A press conference held by Naam Thamizhar Katchi (NTK) leader Seeman in Tamil Nadu on Sunday spiralled into a serious confrontation after a tense exchange with a journalist escalated far beyond a routine political disagreement. The incident unfolded during what was expected to be a standard press briefing, but the atmosphere shifted abruptly when Raju, a reporter from a Tamil news channel, posed pointed questions regarding two politically sensitive issues — the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Union government’s recent rejection of the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the proposed metro rail projects in Madurai and Coimbatore.
Raju’s line of questioning appeared to irritate Seeman, who initially responded sharply before the situation grew progressively heated. Eyewitnesses reported that Seeman’s tone became increasingly confrontational, and his remarks took on a dismissive and disrespectful edge. The exchange quickly escalated into a full-blown argument in front of the gathered media, with the NTK chief visibly losing his composure. The confrontation not only disrupted the briefing but also appeared to unsettle several attendees who later described the scene as unexpectedly volatile for a routine press meet.
As tensions peaked, cadres of the NTK present at the venue allegedly intervened aggressively. Instead of calming the situation, they reportedly grabbed the journalist and dragged him out of the press conference hall by force. In the scuffle that followed, the reporter sustained a neck injury. The abrupt and violent removal of a member of the press sparked immediate outrage among other journalists and political observers, many of whom expressed concern over the increasingly hostile climate faced by media workers while covering political events.
Following the incident, the injured reporter filed a formal complaint with the local police. Based on his account, authorities registered a case against Seeman and three individuals associated with the NTK. The FIR invokes multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), signalling that the police are treating the allegations with considerable seriousness. Senior law enforcement officials confirmed that an investigation is now underway, which will include examining video footage from the press event and taking statements from other journalists who witnessed the altercation.
The episode has since sparked widespread discussions on social media and beyond, with many raising concerns about press freedom, political intolerance, and the growing risks faced by journalists engaging in critical questioning. Media associations and civil society groups have condemned the alleged assault, urging the state government and the Election Commission to take note, particularly given the sensitivity surrounding the SIR exercise and the broader political climate in Tamil Nadu.
