Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, has publicly announced that she is cutting all political and personal ties with her family, accusing her brother Tejashwi Yadav’s inner circle of subjecting her to humiliation, verbal abuse, and even physical intimidation. In a deeply emotional outburst on social media, Acharya said she was forced away from her own family and treated in a manner no daughter or sister should ever have to endure. She alleged that during the confrontation, she was abused with “filthy language” and that someone even raised a slipper at her as though to hit her, an act she described as the ultimate insult.
Acharya’s announcement came just a day after the RJD suffered a crushing defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections. She accused two of Tejashwi Yadav’s closest aides — Sanjay Yadav and Rameez — of being responsible not only for the party’s electoral downfall but also for orchestrating the campaign against her within the family. According to her, these two individuals pushed her to leave politics, disown her family, and bear the blame for the party’s collapse. Her posts described the emotional trauma she endured, saying she had to walk away from her “weeping parents and sisters” and that she had been left “orphaned” by the very people she trusted.
In another post written shortly after, Rohini Acharya said she had been slandered with shocking accusations. She claimed people told her she had donated her kidney to her father only for financial gain, that she had taken crores of rupees in exchange, and that she secured a Lok Sabha ticket because of it. She called these allegations deeply hurtful, asserting that she had acted out of love and duty, not material interest.
Acharya, who holds a medical degree and later chose to become a homemaker in Singapore with her husband, unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections last year from Saran. She clarified that her decision to quit politics was not impulsive but compelled by the treatment she received within the party. Speaking to the media, she said that she considers herself “without a family” now, insisting that Tejashwi Yadav, Sanjay Yadav, and Rameez were the ones who pushed her out and that anyone questioning their role in the recent electoral defeat is mistreated or expelled.
Reports suggest that her resentment may also be linked to the earlier expulsion of Tej Pratap Yadav, Lalu Prasad’s elder son, though she continued campaigning for Tejashwi during the elections. The RJD, however, performed disastrously, collapsing from 75 seats to just 24, with the wider Mahagathbandhan alliance also reduced to a mere 35 seats.
The political fallout has been swift. BJP leaders attacked Lalu Yadav and the RJD leadership, arguing that the treatment of Rohini Acharya reflects a deeply patriarchal and discriminatory mindset within the family. BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya said that even after donating a kidney to her father, Rohini was sidelined in favour of Tejashwi. Another BJP leader, Nishikant Dubey, sharply criticised Tejashwi Yadav, comparing him to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, suggesting he was eliminating his siblings to consolidate power, much like Aurangzeb did in history.
The controversy has not only exposed bitter internal conflicts within the Yadav family but has also dealt another blow to an already badly weakened RJD, raising serious questions about leadership, internal discipline, and the party’s future direction.
