Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district launched a major anti-terror operation early Wednesday after receiving credible intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the remote and rugged Chhatru region. The area lies in the upper mountainous belt of Kishtwar, known for dense forests and difficult terrain, making penetration and surveillance challenging for security personnel.
Acting upon the intelligence tip-off, coordinated teams from the Indian Army’s White Knight Corps and the Jammu and Kashmir Police moved into the locality during the early hours, initiating a systematic search of the region. As they advanced through the terrain, troops established contact with suspected terrorists, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire. Officials confirmed that the encounter began shortly after security forces closed in on the suspected hideout based on tracked movement and intelligence monitoring.
In a statement posted on X, the White Knight Corps noted that alert troops, operating jointly with local police units, had successfully engaged militants in the Chhatru sector, and that active gunfire was underway. Security sources indicated that approximately two to three militants are believed to be cornered in the area. The group reportedly has been active across the Kishtwar belt for several months, and intelligence agencies had been tracking their movement patterns, hideouts, and support channels leading up to this operation.
The Chhatru region has seen intermittent militant presence over the past year, prompting intensified security surveillance and increased deployment of counter-insurgency units. Kishtwar, historically affected by militancy in earlier decades, has witnessed renewed attempts at infiltration and movement by small terrorist cells, particularly in remote high-altitude pockets. Security forces have, therefore, stepped up patrols, intelligence gathering, and combing operations to prevent militants from re-establishing influence in the region.
