Unprecedented floods devastate southern Thailand, killing 145 people and displacing thousands more

At least 145 people have died in the catastrophic floods sweeping across southern Thailand, with officials confirming that the scale of devastation has become clearer only after water levels began to drop. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that more than 1.2 million households—affecting roughly 3.6 million people across 12 provinces—have been impacted by days of relentless rainfall that inundated towns, cut off major roads, and caused extensive structural damage.

The death toll has risen sharply in the past 24 hours, particularly in Songkhla province, which alone has recorded at least 110 fatalities. Many deaths were confirmed only after floodwaters receded enough for rescue teams to access previously unreachable neighbourhoods. In Hat Yai, the largest city in the region, emergency personnel recovered multiple bodies from residential areas that had been submerged for days.

Authorities noted that although water levels have declined in most districts, pockets of southern Thailand continue to face severe flooding. Weather officials warned that thunderstorms remain possible and could complicate ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Across affected regions, daily life has been paralysed. Roads were washed out or rendered impassable, and low-lying homes, shops, and vehicles were completely submerged. Images from the ground showed collapsed roadways, broken power poles, and heaps of debris—including appliances and personal belongings—strewn across muddy streets. Cars and motorbikes were seen overturned or pushed into piles by strong currents.

Relief teams are now expanding their reach into newly accessible areas, clearing debris, delivering supplies, and searching for survivors. As the water recedes further, authorities expect the full extent of the financial and human toll to become even more apparent in the days ahead.
