Usha Vance, a mother of three, speaks out after being seen without a wedding band

United States Second Lady Usha Vance has addressed a new wave of online speculation about her marriage to Vice President JD Vance after photographs of her without her wedding ring reignited months of rumours. The images were taken during her November 19 visit to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where she accompanied First Lady Melania Trump. Close-up shots from the event showed her left hand noticeably bare, setting off widespread chatter on social media and prompting fresh commentary about the state of the couple’s relationship.

As the photos spread rapidly across platforms, online commentators revived earlier rumours, with some suggesting the missing ring signalled marital strain, while others turned the moment into jokes about the Vice President’s possible domestic troubles. The speculation grew quickly enough that Usha Vance’s team issued a clarification. A spokesperson told People magazine that Usha, a mother of three, “does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and sometimes forgets her ring,” indicating that the missing ring was neither unusual nor symbolic.

The couple has already been under public scrutiny in recent months due to viral footage of Vice President Vance warmly hugging Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, during a Turning Point USA event. Erika, while introducing Vance at the University of Mississippi, remarked that she noticed certain similarities between her late husband and the Vice President—a statement that, combined with the embrace, set off a storm of commentary online. The clip circulated widely and fuelled speculation about the Vances’ marriage.

JD Vance added another dimension to the public conversation when he told a Turning Point USA audience last month that he hopes his wife, who is Hindu, will one day adopt Catholicism, the faith he embraced after converting in 2019. His comment was widely discussed and dissected online, adding to the environment of heightened public attention surrounding the couple.

Usha and JD Vance first met as students at Yale Law School and married in 2014. They have three young children—Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 3—and have often presented themselves as a close-knit family navigating the challenges of public life. The latest clarification from Usha’s team appears aimed at tamping down renewed speculation and reminding the public that everyday oversights—such as occasionally forgetting to wear a wedding ring—can easily be misinterpreted in the glare of national attention.
