Watch: Obama's heartfelt greeting to veterans ahead of Veterans Day goes viral

Former US President Barack Obama made an unannounced appearance at Washington’s Reagan National Airport, where he personally greeted a group of Korean and Vietnam War veterans arriving from Wisconsin, marking an emotional tribute ahead of Veterans Day.

As the veterans disembarked their Honor Flight, Obama stood at the gate with a warm smile, shaking hands, offering words of gratitude, and presenting each veteran with a commemorative presidential coin—a gesture he has reserved for occasions of deep personal meaning.

“Hello, everybody,” Obama greeted as the surprised veterans entered the terminal. One startled veteran reportedly exclaimed, “What?” in disbelief before breaking into a grin and saluting the former president.

Speaking to the 87 veterans gathered before him, Obama said, “As we approach Veterans Day, I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for your extraordinary service. To you and your families—the sacrifices you made to protect our country will always be honored, and we are deeply grateful.”

In his characteristic light-hearted tone, Obama added, “And we also happened to welcome you with a 70-degree day in D.C., which doesn’t always happen around here.”

The veterans, many in their 70s and 80s, were part of an Honor Flight — a nationwide program that provides free trips for veterans to visit the war memorials in Washington, D.C., built in their honor. The Honor Flight Network, active for nearly two decades, has so far enabled over 317,000 veterans to make the journey, many of them visiting the memorials for the first time.

After the visit, Obama shared a reflection on social media: “Ahead of Veterans Day, I was honored to welcome a flight of veterans and their families as they arrived in D.C. To all those who bravely served our country, thank you for your courage, your devotion, and your extraordinary service. The sacrifices you and your families have made to protect our country will be remembered today and every day.”

For the veterans, the surprise encounter transformed what was already a day of remembrance into an unforgettable moment of gratitude and recognition from a former Commander-in-Chief. The visit was brief but heartfelt—a symbolic reminder of unity, respect, and enduring appreciation for those who served.
