Weather-related physical problems Andaman and Nicobar Islands are under a cyclone alert

The India Meteorological Department has reported the development of a cyclonic system in the Bay of Bengal that is expected to strengthen in the coming days. A formal cyclone alert has been issued for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as authorities prepare for worsening weather conditions beginning November 4.

According to senior IMD officials, the process began on the morning of November 2 when a low-pressure area formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal near the Myanmar coast. Meteorologists noted that the related cyclonic circulation currently extends almost six kilometres above sea level and is showing signs of gradual organisation.

Forecast models indicate that the system will track northward before curving northwest along the Myanmar-Bangladesh coastline over the next two days. During this period, winds are expected to strengthen, and sea conditions will deteriorate. The IMD has specifically warned of squally weather over the North Andaman Sea, where surface wind speeds could reach approximately 55 kilometres per hour.

Officials expect the disturbance to intensify further from November 4 onward, with rough seas and potentially hazardous marine conditions likely as the system evolves. Although land impact details are still being watched, authorities emphasised that precautionary steps are necessary due to the forecast escalation in storm strength and wind intensity.

In response, the Andaman and Nicobar administration has advised fishermen to stay ashore. Local boat operators, residents, and tourists have been asked to avoid venturing into the sea and to suspend leisure activities along coastal areas until conditions stabilize. Emergency services in the islands are preparing for possible disruptions, and officials have urged the public to follow weather updates and adhere to safety instructions.
