What is the Trump-Musk feud about? Tesla CEO at the Saudi Crown Prince's dinner at the White House

Elon Musk’s reappearance at the White House for President Donald Trump’s state dinner in honour of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman marks a striking turn in a relationship that only months ago seemed irreparably damaged. Musk, once a key adviser to Trump’s administration, had been central to the President’s early governance strategy, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and driving aggressive cuts across federal agencies.

Their alliance, built on political alignment and shared ambitions, fractured dramatically after Musk publicly condemned Trump’s sweeping tax-and-spending package as fiscally irresponsible. The Tesla and SpaceX chief went further, announcing plans to launch a new political party and accusing the administration of financial recklessness. Trump retaliated by warning that the billions of dollars in federal subsidies supporting Musk’s companies could be withdrawn.

The fallout became intensely personal and deeply political, with both men using their platforms to attack each other. Analysts noted that Musk’s increasingly hard-right rhetoric and the feud itself began to damage Tesla’s global reputation, denting consumer confidence and contributing to a slump in the company’s stock value.

Since then, Musk and Trump have been seen together only once—in September, when the two exchanged a brief handshake at the memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk. That encounter stirred speculation about whether a rapprochement was possible, but Tuesday night’s dinner was the first clear signal that both sides may be edging toward a thaw.

The White House dinner, held to welcome the Saudi crown prince as he seeks to revive his international standing, served as a high-profile stage for Musk’s return. His presence alongside global figures—including football icon Cristiano Ronaldo and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang—suggested an intentional re-entry into diplomatic and political circles he once dominated.

Whether this signals renewed cooperation with the Trump administration or simply a strategic decision to reconnect with powerful allies remains unclear, but the symbolism was unmistakable. The return of Musk to Trump’s side, even temporarily, marks a notable shift in a relationship defined this year by volatility, rivalry and the heavy political consequences of their public clash.
