While playing on a beach near Chennai, four women—including a Sri Lankan refugee—drown

Four women lost their lives at Ennore beach in Chennai after being pulled into the sea by strong waves while spending leisure time near the shoreline. Among the victims was a woman living in a Sri Lankan refugee camp.

The deceased were identified as Shalini (17), Gayathri (18), Bhavani (19), and Devaki (30), all employees of a private clothing outlet in Gummidipundi. Police reports indicate that the group had gone to an isolated section of the beach for a casual outing. While they were near the water, a large wave dragged Shalini into the sea. The remaining three women attempted to rescue her but were also overpowered by the current.

Local fishermen and authorities recovered their bodies, which were then taken to Stanley Government Hospital for post-mortem procedures.

Police at Ennore have filed a case and begun investigating the circumstances, heightening attention on safety concerns at remote beach spots.
