Congress leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu has triggered a major political controversy in Punjab by alleging that becoming the chief minister requires “₹500 crore in a suitcase,” a remark that has exposed deep internal discord within the state Congress unit and invited sharp criticism from the BJP ahead of upcoming elections.
She made the claim while stating that her husband, former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, would return to active politics only if the party projected him as its chief ministerial face. Speaking to reporters after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, she insisted they “speak only for Punjab” but do not possess the kind of money she alleges influences CM appointments. She clarified that no one directly demanded money from them, but claimed that “the one who gives a suitcase of ₹500 crore becomes the CM.”
Navjot Kaur also highlighted intense infighting in the Punjab Congress, saying at least five leaders are eyeing the top post and would never allow Sidhu to be named the chief ministerial candidate. According to her, Sidhu will step forward only if the party formally declares him as its CM face; otherwise, he is content working outside politics.
The BJP quickly seized on the remarks, branding them proof of “institutionalised corruption” within Congress. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed her statement shows corruption has engulfed the party at all levels. Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar echoed the sentiment, alleging money-driven politics has long been part of the Congress culture and even referenced claims that a former Congress CM allegedly paid ₹350 crore for the post. Jakhar also launched a simultaneous attack on the AAP government, accusing the state police of functioning like “uniformed gangsters” and alleging a breakdown of law and order.
The comments come at a time when the Punjab Congress is already grappling with factionalism and leadership uncertainty. Navjot Singh Sidhu has been largely absent from organisational activity, skipped campaigning during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, returned to IPL commentary, and recently shifted focus to his personal YouTube channel.
With Assembly elections scheduled in 2027, Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s explosive allegations have intensified the spotlight on Punjab Congress’s internal fractures and its unresolved leadership question. The AAP government has not responded to her remarks so far.
