After meeting with the PM, Satya Nadella pledges $17.5 billion to India's AI-first future

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has unveiled a landmark funding commitment of USD 17.5 billion to accelerate India’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, marking the single largest investment the company has ever made in Asia. Nadella said the goal of the investment is to build the digital backbone—ranging from AI infrastructure to workforce training—that will enable India to emerge as one of the global centres of AI development and adoption.

The announcement came shortly after Nadella met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi. In a post on X, Nadella described their discussion as inspiring and said the scale of Microsoft’s investment reflected the company’s confidence in India’s AI ambitions. He emphasised that Microsoft aims to help India develop the infrastructure, sovereign capabilities and talent pipeline needed for an “AI-first” future.

Prime Minister Modi, responding to Nadella’s message, called the meeting productive and welcomed Microsoft’s decision to make its largest-ever Asia investment on Indian soil. Modi said India is emerging as a global force in artificial intelligence and that the world is increasingly optimistic about the country’s leadership in the sector. He added that India’s youth will use this opportunity to innovate and deploy AI solutions that contribute to a better and more sustainable planet.

Nadella is on a four-day tour of India, beginning in Delhi before travelling to Bengaluru and Mumbai, to push forward Microsoft’s plans for cloud services and AI expansion in the country. The investment follows another significant announcement Nadella made during his last visit in January, when Microsoft pledged USD 3 billion over two years to advance cloud infrastructure and AI training in India. At that time, Nadella laid out Microsoft’s target of training 10 million Indians in AI skills by 2030, including learners from smaller cities and a large share of women participants.

A major upcoming move is the rollout of Microsoft 365 Copilot with local data processing in India by the end of 2025. This deployment will allow data to be stored and processed within India’s borders, offering secure AI compatibility for sectors such as government, banking and financial services, insurance, and healthcare—areas where data sovereignty is critical.

Nadella’s visit and the scale of Microsoft’s commitment underline India’s rising status in the global technology landscape. The country is now positioned not only as a vast market for digital solutions but also as a powerhouse for AI innovation, research, and talent creation. With deeper collaboration between India and the United States in digital trade and AI-driven workforce development, Microsoft’s investment is expected to play a central role in shaping an inclusive and long-term growth trajectory for India’s digital economy.
