An IIT Kanpur student was discovered hanging in a hostel room and left a letter saying, Sorry, everyone

A tragic incident unfolded at IIT Kanpur during the winter vacation, casting a shadow over the campus even as alumni were celebrating the institute’s future following the announcement of a ₹100 crore contribution. A final-year BTech student, identified as Jai Singh Meena, was found dead in his hostel room on Monday morning, in what police believe to be a case of suicide. The incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community and renewed concerns about student mental health at one of India’s premier institutions.

Jai Singh Meena, 26, was a fourth-year student of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering and hailed from Ajmer in Rajasthan. He was staying in Room 148 of E Block at the campus hostel. According to officials, Meena had been alone in his room as his roommate had gone home for the winter break. When repeated attempts to contact him failed, the door was forced open, revealing his body hanging from a rod inside the room. Police said he had used a strip torn from a blanket to take the extreme step.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Ashutosh Kumar said preliminary findings suggest that Meena may have first attempted to harm himself by cutting his wrist with a knife. Bloodstains and the knife were found in the room, indicating that the injury may not have been fatal, after which he allegedly resorted to hanging. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

No suicide note was recovered from the room, but investigators found a notebook containing the words “Sorry Everyone,” which has been taken into custody as part of the probe. Police have said that while the circumstances point toward suicide, all possible angles are being examined before reaching a final conclusion.

The IIT Kanpur administration has informed the student’s family, who are expected to arrive soon. In a brief statement, the institute expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family. As the campus is currently on winter vacation, which began on December 28, the area was relatively quiet at the time of the incident. Reports indicate that Meena had been planning to return home during the break.

The incident has once again brought attention to the growing concern over student deaths at IIT Kanpur. This marks the third reported suicide at the institute in 2025 alone. Earlier, on October 2, another student, Dheeraj Saini, had died by suicide on campus. Official records indicate that more than a dozen students have taken their lives at IIT Kanpur over the past five years, with over 18 such cases reported in the last 15 years, raising serious questions about mental health pressures despite the availability of counselling and support services.

Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities have stated that further details will emerge after the post-mortem and inquiry are completed.
