Former Japanese Prime Minister Kishida has lunch with Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry in Tokyo

Former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida revealed that former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and American pop star Katy Perry joined him and his wife, Yuko, for lunch in Tokyo this week — a meeting that instantly drew global attention given the high-profile pairing. Kishida shared a photograph of the four standing in front of a Christmas tree and described the meeting as a warm continuation of the friendship he built with Trudeau during their time as world leaders.

Kishida recalled his close collaboration with Trudeau, highlighting their work on the Japan–Canada Action Plan and Trudeau’s visit to the Atomic Bomb Museum during the G7 Hiroshima Summit, and said he was pleased that their friendship remains strong. Trudeau reposted Kishida’s message, thanking him for the invitation and commending his commitment to the international rules-based order and global cooperation.

The lunch also marked a milestone in the public spotlight for Trudeau and Perry as a couple. The pair have been seen together frequently since July, shortly after both ended long-term relationships, but this is the first time Perry has joined Trudeau in a setting involving former heads of government. They have made multiple public appearances in recent months, including during Perry’s Lifetimes Tour, and were first photographed as a couple at a Paris cabaret event celebrating her birthday in October.

The Tokyo meeting, while informal, has amplified curiosity about the couple’s relationship and added a political-celebrity twist to global headlines.
