He was slain in a Canadian hospital, and his widow describes the experience next to the body of an Indian guy

Standing beside her husband’s lifeless body, the grieving wife of a 44-year-old Indian-origin man has accused a Canadian hospital of negligence, saying his death could have been prevented if timely medical care had been provided. Her husband, Prashant Sreekumar, died of a suspected cardiac arrest in Edmonton after repeatedly complaining of severe chest pain and waiting nearly eight hours for treatment. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over emergency care delays in Canada’s healthcare system.

Prashant, a father of three, was taken to Grey Nuns Hospital in southeast Edmonton on December 22 after he began experiencing intense chest pain while at work. A client drove him to the hospital, where he was initially assessed at triage and then asked to wait in the emergency room. Despite repeatedly informing medical staff about the severity of his pain, he was told there was nothing alarming. Doctors conducted an ECG, administered Tylenol, and instructed him to remain seated in the waiting area.

Visibly distraught, his wife later described the ordeal while standing beside his body. She said her husband had been sitting in the triage area from around 12:20 pm until nearly 8:50 pm, continuously complaining of chest pain. During this time, his blood pressure reportedly kept rising, eventually reaching a dangerously high level of 210. Yet, she alleged, no urgent intervention was provided. According to her, hospital staff dismissed his condition, stating that chest pain was not being treated as an emergency, and no further tests or treatment were offered beyond painkillers.

After nearly eight hours of waiting, Prashant was finally taken into the emergency room. However, within moments of being admitted, he collapsed. His father, Kumar Sreekumar, who had rushed to the hospital after learning of his son’s condition, recalled the heartbreaking moment. He said that after sitting for barely ten seconds, Prashant clutched his chest, stood up, and collapsed. Despite immediate efforts, he could not be revived.

Earlier, while still waiting for treatment, Prashant had reportedly told his father that the pain was unbearable. Despite repeated pleas, he remained unattended in the waiting area for hours. The family believes that the delay in care directly contributed to his death.

Following the incident, Canadian health authorities said they could not comment on the specifics of the case due to patient privacy laws. However, they confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for review. Covenant Health, which oversees the hospital, issued a statement expressing condolences to the family and said patient safety remains its top priority.

The tragedy has triggered widespread concern and debate over emergency room wait times, triage practices, and whether patients with potentially life-threatening symptoms are being adequately assessed in Canada’s healthcare system.
