In the midst of the Brown shooting investigation, Kash Patel is being criticized for his podcast with his girlfriend

FBI Director Kash Patel has come under intense criticism after making an appearance on a podcast alongside his girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, at a time when federal authorities are still conducting a nationwide manhunt for the suspect behind the deadly Brown University shooting. The timing of the interview has triggered widespread outrage and renewed questions about Patel’s priorities and leadership.

Patel’s decision to participate in an interview with conservative podcaster Katie Miller, while FBI agents and local law enforcement continue their search for the gunman who killed two students and injured nine others, has drawn sharp reactions from lawmakers, former FBI officials, and political opponents. Critics argue that the appearance projects a sense of complacency and poor judgment during one of the bureau’s most sensitive and high-profile investigations.

Several former federal agents have also revived allegations that Patel has misused FBI resources for Wilkins, despite the two not being married. These claims include accusations that Patel authorised the use of an FBI aircraft to attend Wilkins’ singing performances, arranged official protection for her, and instructed agents to drive one of her friends home while intoxicated. Although Patel has previously denied any misuse of government assets, the controversy has resurfaced amid heightened scrutiny of his conduct during the ongoing investigation.

A short teaser clip from the podcast, released by Miller, who is married to Trump adviser Stephen Miller, quickly went viral on social media. The clip shows Patel and Wilkins laughing and openly discussing their relationship, with Miller jokingly questioning why Patel has not yet proposed marriage. The light-hearted tone of the conversation further inflamed criticism, given the gravity of the situation unfolding at Brown University.

The backlash intensified as the FBI continued to search for the suspect responsible for opening fire during an economics exam review session at the Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island. Many critics argued that the director’s public focus on personal matters undermined confidence in the bureau’s leadership at a critical moment.

During the podcast, Wilkins addressed conspiracy theories circulating online that describe her as a “Mossad honeypot,” allegations she strongly denied. She stated that she is neither Jewish nor Israeli and said such claims are dangerous. Wilkins has since filed lawsuits against individuals spreading these accusations, using the same law firm that represents Patel, arguing that the claims have put her personal safety at risk.

The controversy also drew political reactions. The press office of California Governor Gavin Newsom reposted the viral clip, criticising Patel for appearing on a podcast while a mass shooter remained at large. The post questioned why the FBI director appeared to have time to travel on what it described as a taxpayer-funded private jet for a personal media appearance during an active manhunt.

Former FBI agent and whistleblower Kyle Seraphin also condemned the situation in blunt terms, expressing disbelief at what he described as a deeply troubling moment for the agency’s leadership.

Meanwhile, the FBI has continued its investigation, releasing new images of a person of interest and announcing a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the shooter.
