Indian detained in the UK for putting internet advertisements for human trafficking and smuggling migrants in trucks

A 29-year-old Indian national has been arrested in the UK for allegedly smuggling illegal immigrants and advertising people-smuggling services on social media, following a joint operation by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and West Midlands Police.

The man was arrested on Monday at an address on Holyhead Road in the Handsworth area of Birmingham. Investigators suspect he was working on behalf of an organised crime network that transported migrants concealed in the backs of lorries. He has been arrested on suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration and remains in custody for questioning.

During the raid, officers seized several electronic devices that are now being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. A second man was also arrested at the same location for being in the UK illegally and was subsequently handed over to immigration authorities.

Confirming the arrest, NCA Branch Commander Kevin Broadhead said tackling organised immigration crime remains a top priority and that the agency is determined to disrupt and dismantle the criminal networks involved. He added that the investigation, being carried out with West Midlands Police, is ongoing.

The arrest comes amid a wider crackdown by the British government on illegal migration. In May, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced tougher measures to end what he described as an “experiment in open borders,” pledging to regain control of the UK’s borders.

According to the UK Home Office, nearly 50,000 people with no legal right to remain in the country have been removed since July 2024. It also said arrests, convictions and seizures linked to people-smuggling offences have increased by 33 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has emphasised that reducing illegal arrivals must go hand in hand with stricter enforcement against those without the right to stay. Official figures released in August showed that the number of Indian nationals held in immigration detention had risen by 108 per cent over the past year, reaching 2,715 people.

Earlier this year, two men from London were sentenced to more than five years in prison each for attempting to smuggle four Indian migrants into the UK. The migrants were discovered hidden in a secret compartment behind stacks of dirty tyres inside a van, highlighting the dangerous methods used by people-smuggling networks.
