K Chandrasekhar Rao calls for protests over Telangana water rights and criticizes the Congress

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led government in Telangana, branding it a “useless regime” and accusing it of failing to safeguard the state’s rightful share of river water. He announced that the BRS would soon take to the streets with agitations, particularly over the Palamuru–Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project, to defend Telangana’s water interests.

KCR’s remarks came just days after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said he was willing to convene a special session of the Telangana Assembly to hold a detailed debate on the Krishna and Godavari river water disputes with the former chief minister. Rao, however, dismissed the Congress government’s intent, alleging a complete lack of seriousness in pursuing the matter.

Addressing a press conference, Rao alleged that the Congress government had failed to act decisively after the Centre returned the detailed project report (DPR) of the Palamuru–Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project. He said that any responsible incoming government should have ensured continuity of major infrastructure projects, but accused the present dispensation of abandoning the project and not following up effectively once the DPR was sent back.

According to Rao, the state government should have immediately mobilised political pressure by leading an all-party delegation to New Delhi to press Telangana’s case before the Centre. He alleged that this inaction reflected the government’s lack of commitment to farmers and irrigation development in the region.

KCR further claimed that the Centre, which depends on the support of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), would go to any extent to protect its allies. He insinuated that the DPR was returned not on technical grounds but due to political considerations linked to the Centre’s equations with its partners.

Stating that he had maintained silence on the issue for some time, Rao said he would now actively confront both the state and Central governments. He announced that the BRS would organise public meetings across Telangana to expose what he described as the failures and collusion of the two governments. As the main opposition party, he said, it was the BRS’s responsibility to raise these issues after giving the government adequate time to act.

Rao also accused the Congress government of remaining mute in the face of what he termed injustice to Telangana, alleged a rise in crime across the state, and claimed that the ruling party had cheated the public by making promises before the elections that it had no intention of fulfilling.

The former chief minister said that meetings of the BRS Legislature Party and the BRS Parliamentary Party were held on Sunday, during which members discussed the status of the Palamuru–Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project and deliberated on what Rao described as deception by both the state and Central governments on critical issues affecting Telangana.
