Massive protests across Pakistan have intensified pressure on the government as rumours over Imran Khan’s alleged death in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail continue to sweep social media without clarification from authorities. Demonstrations have erupted in Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Karachi, Quetta, and multiple smaller cities, with crowds demanding immediate proof of life and the unconditional release of the former prime minister, who has not been seen or heard from publicly for more than six weeks.
The crisis escalated further after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi staged an overnight sit-in outside Adiala Jail, insisting on an update on Khan’s health and whereabouts. His protest was joined by provincial cabinet members and PTI lawmakers, who accused the federal government and the military establishment of illegally blocking court-ordered family meetings and withholding information.
The uproar has pushed Islamabad to consider imposing Governor’s Rule in PTI-controlled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik confirmed that the option is “actively under consideration,” citing security breakdowns, governance failures, and alleged attempts by the KP government to “block routes and cut the province off from the rest of the country.” Under Pakistan’s Constitution, Governor’s Rule can be enforced under Articles 232 and 234 on the prime minister’s advice, with the president granting final approval. Malik noted that the measure can initially last two months and be extended further if required.
The mere suggestion of Governor’s Rule has fuelled tensions. Analysts warn that dismantling the PTI-led provincial government could ignite violent unrest in the northwest, where Khan’s popularity remains strongest. Journalist Imran Riaz Khan cautioned that authorities are “playing with fire,” arguing that removing the PTI government in KP would trigger a backlash the state “cannot contain.”
Neither the federal government nor the military leadership has released any verifiable information on Khan’s physical condition, despite judicial directives permitting weekly family visits. Khan’s sons have publicly stated they fear “something irreversible” is being concealed, while supporters insist the information blackout is deliberate.
The situation has now evolved into a standoff between Islamabad and KP, with the political crisis deepening amid unanswered questions about Imran Khan’s safety, the legality of his detention conditions, and the future of the PTI-run provincial government under threat from federal intervention.
