The AAP's Christmas cartoon makes fun of the BJP's "jumlas" about pollution, Yamuna

On Thursday, the Aam Aadmi Party escalated its political offensive against the Bharatiya Janata Party by releasing a Christmas-themed cartoon, accusing the ruling party of offering hollow slogans rather than fulfilling the assurances it made ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.

Shared on social media platform X, the cartoon takes a satirical swipe at the BJP, portraying its election promises as deceptive “jumlas” instead of meaningful policy outcomes that could improve the lives of Delhi’s residents.

The illustration, presented in the style of a festive greeting, carries the caption “Merry Christmas of BJP’s jumlas in Delhi,” setting the tone for a critique that blends humour with sharp political messaging.

At the centre of the image, four ordinary-looking citizens from Delhi are shown standing in a queue, each holding a neatly wrapped gift box. When the boxes are opened, spring-loaded boxing gloves suddenly pop out, each clearly marked with the word “jumla,” symbolising broken promises delivering a figurative punch rather than benefits.

Each of the boxes represents a key commitment made by the BJP during the 2025 Delhi Assembly campaign. One box refers to the pledge of creating a pollution-free Delhi, another highlights the promise of a Rs 2,500 monthly payment to poor women, a third points to the long-standing assurance of cleaning the Yamuna river, and the fourth alludes to the offer of free LPG cylinders.

The expressions on the faces of the people opening these boxes range from disbelief to disappointment, reinforcing the message that what was presented as a festive gift has instead turned into an unpleasant surprise for ordinary citizens.

To the side of the image stands a Santa Claus-like caricature resembling Prime Minister Narendra Modi, smiling broadly while holding a sack filled with gifts, a visual cue meant to underline AAP’s claim that the BJP packages its promises attractively but fails to deliver substance.

Through this cartoon, AAP sought to convey that the BJP’s poll commitments are not only unfulfilled but end up hurting citizens by raising expectations without offering tangible relief or solutions.

The cartoon directly references the BJP’s 2025 Delhi election manifesto, titled ‘Vikasit Dilli Sankalp Patra,’ which included promises such as a monthly allowance of Rs 2,500 for poor women, a Rs 500 subsidy on LPG cylinders along with a free cylinder during festivals like Holi and Diwali, cleaning the Yamuna river and developing a riverfront within three years, and tackling Delhi’s chronic air pollution.

AAP leaders have consistently alleged that the BJP-led Delhi government, under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is more focused on publicity and optics than on effective governance or policy execution.

On the issue of the Yamuna, AAP has accused the BJP of resorting to symbolic gestures rather than genuine clean-up efforts. During Chhath Puja, party leaders even challenged BJP officials to drink the river’s water to substantiate claims that it had been cleaned.

Delhi’s hazardous air quality has been another major point of contention. AAP has repeatedly criticised the BJP for failing to control pollution in the National Capital Region, with senior leader Saurabh Bharadwaj alleging that air quality data has been manipulated to mislead the public.

The party has also referred to an India Today investigation that exposed irregularities in the issuance of Pollution Under Control certificates in Delhi. Using those findings, AAP labelled the BJP administration a “government of farzivada,” accusing it of systemic forgery and manipulation to protect its narrative.

Bharadwaj argued that issues such as questionable AQI data, claims of a clean Yamuna, and other governance failures point to deep-rooted institutional problems rather than isolated lapses.

By combining these allegations with a visually striking and seasonally themed cartoon, AAP used satire as a political tool to question whether the BJP’s high-profile promises will ever translate into real and lasting relief for the people of Delhi.
