The quiet force behind Lakmé and Westside, Simone Tata, passes away at age 95

Simone Tata — one of the most influential business figures in India’s beauty and retail industries — passed away on Friday at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy defined by branding vision, consumer insight and transformative leadership. She died at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital following a brief illness.

Although she later became synonymous with the Tata empire and Indian enterprise, Simone’s journey began far from India. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, she first visited India in 1953 as a tourist. During this trip, she met industrialist Naval Tata, and the two married in 1955, after which Simone settled permanently in Mumbai and gradually became an integral part of the family’s business landscape.

Simone’s biggest corporate impact came through Lakme, the beauty brand created by the Tata Group in response to the lack of reliable Indian cosmetic products available to women at the time. Rising through key leadership roles and eventually becoming chairperson in the early 1980s, she steered Lakme during a pivotal decade when the brand grew from a niche urban offering into a nationwide symbol of modern beauty, advertising sophistication and homegrown glamour. Under her direction, Lakme achieved widespread recognition, developing into the dominant force in the Indian beauty market. In 1996, the Tata Group sold Lakme to Hindustan Unilever — a landmark business decision that closed one chapter while opening the door to another.

Rather than exiting the industry, Simone Tata redirected the proceeds into building a new retail venture under Trent, giving birth to Westside. With its fashionable yet accessible approach to clothing and lifestyle products, Westside rapidly expanded across Indian cities and became one of the country’s most successful department store chains. This shift marked Simone not only as a pioneer of cosmetics but also as a visionary who helped shape India’s modern retail experience long before the sector’s boom.

Beyond her corporate accomplishments, Simone Tata dedicated time and resources to philanthropy, remaining actively connected to initiatives associated with the Sir Ratan Tata Institute and other charitable causes. Friends, colleagues and members of the Tata family remember her not just as a trailblazing business leader but as a gracious and determined personality whose optimism and clarity of purpose deeply influenced those around her.

In a tribute, the Tata family stated that Simone will forever be remembered for elevating Lakme into a national brand and for laying the foundation for India’s fashion retail sector through Westside, adding that her “positive outlook and strong resolve” remained constant throughout her life.

Her funeral rites are scheduled for Saturday morning at the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Colaba, followed by a mass at 11 am, where family, friends and admirers are expected to pay their final respects to one of India’s most remarkable business visionaries.
