US authorities have released a fresh surveillance video linked to the deadly shooting at Brown University that left two people dead and nine others injured. The footage, shared publicly by FBI Director Kash Patel, offers a clearer glimpse of the suspected gunman and shows him methodically surveying areas around the Ivy League campus in the days leading up to the attack.
According to investigators, the newly released video captures the suspect walking across multiple pavements near Brown University’s engineering building, where the shooting later took place. The footage shows the man moving through the area for nearly an hour, beginning shortly after 2 pm on Saturday, a day before the gunfire erupted while students were in the middle of final examinations.
The suspect is seen dressed entirely in black, with his face covered, appearing to conduct reconnaissance in streets located just a few blocks from the engineering complex. Authorities believe the shooter later returned to the same location and fired approximately 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, triggering chaos on campus and prompting a massive law enforcement response.
In his post on X, FBI Director Kash Patel said the video was released as part of a coordinated effort between the FBI, Providence Police and Rhode Island State Police. He explained that the footage provides a timeline of movements associated with a person of interest in the December 13 shooting and is intended to help the public assist investigators.
Despite multiple videos being made public so far, officials said none clearly show the suspect’s face, as it was either masked or deliberately turned away from cameras. Law enforcement has described the individual as stocky in build and approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, but the lack of a definitive facial image has slowed progress in identifying him.
Police said they have received nearly 200 tips since the attack, but are increasingly relying on public assistance due to the absence of usable footage from inside the engineering building. Brown University President Christina Paxson noted that the campus is equipped with around 1,200 security cameras, yet investigators confirmed that none captured a clear image of the attacker during the shooting itself.
To encourage new leads, the FBI has announced a reward of USD 50,000 for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the suspect. Authorities remain hopeful that someone will recognise the individual’s clothing, gait or movements shown in the video and come forward with crucial details.
The victims of the attack have been identified as 19-year-old Ella Cook, a sophomore who served as vice president of the Brown College Republicans and was active in her church in Birmingham, Alabama, and 18-year-old MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a freshman majoring in Biochemistry and Neuroscience. Umurzokov, originally from Brandermill, Virginia, had immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan with his family as a child.
As the manhunt continues, investigators say the newly released footage is a key piece of evidence that could help close in on the shooter and bring a measure of justice to the victims and the shaken Brown University community.
