An explosion struck a hotel in the central part of Kabul on Monday, leaving several people dead and injured, according to Afghan officials. The blast occurred in the Shahr-e-Naw neighbourhood, one of the city’s most secure and commercially important areas.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qani said early assessments indicated multiple casualties, though authorities were still working to determine the exact number of fatalities and those wounded in the incident. Emergency responders and security personnel rushed to the scene soon after the explosion.
Kabul police spokesperson Khalid Zadran said the hotel that was hit is located in the Shahr-e-Naw district, a busy commercial zone known for its concentration of major office buildings, shopping centres and the presence of several diplomatic missions. The area is typically under tight security due to its strategic importance.
Local sources also reported that civilians were among those affected, with some losing their lives and others sustaining injuries. The precise cause and nature of the explosion were not immediately clear, and investigations were underway as security forces cordoned off the area to assess the damage and gather evidence.
