Around 38 children studying at a government primary school in Khammam district of Telangana reportedly became unwell on Thursday in what is suspected to be a case of food poisoning, causing anxiety among families and local residents.
Officials said the children began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, loose motions and intense stomach cramps soon after eating the meal served at the school. As the children’s condition worsened, worried parents, villagers and school authorities quickly arranged transport and shifted them to the Khammam Government Hospital using whatever means were available, including autorickshaws, motorcycles and ambulances.
Doctors attending to the students stated that nearly 10 of them were in a serious condition and required closer medical attention, while the others were in stable condition and showing signs of recovery with treatment.
After the incident at the school in Bodia Thanda of Konijerla mandal, local revenue and administrative officials visited the hospital to check on the children and review the situation.
Later, the area’s MLA along with the District Education Officer met the hospitalised students and their parents, spoke with the medical teams and assured families that all necessary help would be provided. Parents were urged to remain calm, with assurances that specialised treatment would be arranged if any child needed it.
Education officials said the students’ health was gradually improving and that there was no immediate threat to their lives. Meanwhile, authorities are expected to conduct a formal investigation into the incident, including collecting and testing food samples to determine what caused the suspected poisoning.
