Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s brief visit to New Delhi has been widely seen as a significant diplomatic moment, underscoring the depth and maturity of India–UAE relations. Despite lasting only around two hours, the visit carried symbolic weight, highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi breaking protocol to personally receive the UAE President at the airport.
The two leaders were seen exchanging a warm hug on arrival, a gesture that reflected the close personal rapport between Narendra Modi and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This display of familiarity has come to symbolise the evolving nature of ties between India and United Arab Emirates, which have steadily moved beyond formal diplomacy to a relationship marked by trust and strategic alignment.
Although short in duration, the visit is being regarded as diplomatically important, particularly at a time when cooperation between the two countries is expanding across multiple sectors, including defence, trade, energy and regional security. The timing of the visit has added to its significance, as both nations continue to coordinate closely on regional and global issues.
Soon after welcoming the UAE President, Prime Minister Modi shared a message on social media describing Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed as his “brother” and highlighting the importance of the visit. He said the UAE leader’s decision to travel to India reflected the priority he places on strengthening the India–UAE friendship and expressed anticipation for meaningful discussions between the two sides.
The visit was undertaken at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi and marked Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s third official trip to India since becoming President of the UAE, as well as his fifth visit to the country over the past decade. These repeated high-level exchanges underline the sustained engagement and continuity in bilateral relations.
This trip also builds on a series of recent interactions between the two countries, including earlier visits by senior UAE leaders such as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Crown Prince of Dubai. Together, these engagements point to a deliberate effort by both sides to maintain regular political dialogue at the highest levels.
India and the UAE today share close and multi-dimensional ties grounded in strong political understanding, deep cultural connections and rapidly growing economic cooperation. The UAE remains one of India’s most important trading and investment partners, with the partnership further strengthened through initiatives such as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, the local currency settlement mechanism and the Bilateral Investment Treaty.
