What initially appeared to be an isolated killing has unfolded into a deeply disturbing triple murder case, as Chennai Police work through a sequence of clues involving a bloodstained gunny sack, missing family members, and multiple crime scenes spread across the city.
The case first came to light on January 26, when residents of Indira Nagar in Chennai’s Adyar neighbourhood noticed blood slowly seeping out of a gunny sack abandoned along a roadside. Alarmed by the sight, locals alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and opened the sack. Inside, they discovered the body of a man who appeared to have been beaten to death, bearing clear signs of severe physical assault.
The body was sent to Royapettah Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination, while senior officers constituted five special investigation teams to piece together the circumstances of the killing. At that stage, police believed they were dealing with a single homicide, though the brutality of the attack suggested a serious and premeditated crime.
CCTV footage from the surrounding area soon provided an important lead. Cameras captured visuals of two unidentified men arriving at the location on a two-wheeler, dumping the gunny sack by the roadside, and fleeing the scene within minutes. The footage raised more questions than answers, but confirmed that the body had been deliberately transported and disposed of.
A significant breakthrough came from a small but crucial piece of evidence recovered from the victim’s clothing. Investigators found a slip of paper containing a few phone numbers in the trouser pocket of the deceased. Tracing those numbers helped police identify the victim as 24-year-old Gaurav Kumar, a native of Bihar, who had been living in Chennai with his wife and their two-year-old child.
As officers began verifying Gaurav Kumar’s background and residence, the investigation took a far more alarming turn. Police discovered that his wife and young child were unaccounted for, and repeated attempts to trace them were unsuccessful. Their sudden disappearance raised fears that the case involved more than a single murder.
Following further inquiry, police detained five men from Bihar who were known associates of the victim. During sustained interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to killing not just Gaurav Kumar, but also his wife and their two-year-old child, transforming the case into a horrifying instance of triple murder.
The grim revelations continued when police recovered the body of the couple’s toddler from the Cooum River. The discovery confirmed investigators’ worst fears and intensified efforts to locate the remaining victim. Multiple police teams have since been deployed to search a nearby dump yard and various stretches of the Cooum riverbank in an attempt to recover the body of Gaurav Kumar’s wife.
As the search continues, investigators are now focused on establishing the motive behind the brutal killings. Police are examining the relationships between the suspects and the victims, possible financial or personal disputes, and the sequence of events that led to the murders. What began with a single blood-soaked gunny sack has now exposed a chilling crime that has shaken the city and left investigators racing for answers.
