Leftists demand that the Center turn down the US invitation to join the Board of Peace for Gaza

India’s Left parties on Wednesday issued a strong appeal to the central government, urging it to reject the United States’ invitation to join the proposed “Board of Peace,” which is meant to oversee the implementation of a so-called Gaza Peace Plan. The parties warned that accepting such an invitation would amount to a serious moral and political failure, describing it as a “grave betrayal” of the long-standing Palestinian cause.

In a joint statement released in New Delhi, the five Left parties—Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (ML) Liberation, All India Forward Bloc, and Revolutionary Socialist Party—alleged that the proposed Board has been deliberately designed to bypass the United Nations and replace established multilateral mechanisms with a new structure dominated and controlled by Washington.

The statement asserted that India’s participation in such a body, which according to the Left does not uphold or safeguard Palestinian rights, would fundamentally undermine India’s historical position on Palestine. The parties argued that joining the Board would signal India’s endorsement of a framework that ignores international law and sidelines the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.

The Left parties further criticised the initiative as being driven by Donald Trump, accusing his administration of attempting to override existing international institutions. They maintained that the United States was seeking to impose a parallel global arrangement that weakens the authority of the United Nations and consolidates unilateral power, rather than pursuing a genuinely inclusive and just peace process.

Calling for a clear and principled stand, the parties said the Indian government should distance itself from what they described as US “imperial ambitions.” They urged New Delhi to remain aligned with the interests of Palestine and other countries of the Global South, which they said are increasingly threatened by unilateral geopolitical interventions.

The joint statement was signed by the general secretaries of all five Left parties: MA Baby of CPI(M), D Raja of CPI, Dipankar Bhattacharya of CPI(ML) Liberation, G Devarajan of the All India Forward Bloc, and Manoj Bhattacharya of the Revolutionary Socialist Party.

India’s position has come under scrutiny after confirmation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an official invitation from Trump to join the Board of Peace. Trump announced the formation of the body in a social media post, describing it as the “greatest and most prestigious board ever assembled,” and said its members would be announced shortly.

The invitation was also publicly highlighted by Sergio Gor, who shared details of Trump’s letter to Modi on social media. According to the communication, the Board is intended to pursue a “bold new approach” to ending the Gaza conflict and addressing broader global disputes, a premise that the Left parties have firmly rejected as unacceptable and harmful to established international norms.
