Thousands of passengers were evacuated from parts of Miami International Airport on Sunday evening after security officials responded to a report of a suspicious unattended bag in the South Terminal, prompting a large-scale precautionary operation. The discovery caused significant disruption during a busy travel period, as authorities moved swiftly to ensure passenger safety.
The incident began around 6 pm local time when deputies received information about an unattended piece of luggage in the departures area near Door 21. As a safety measure, officials ordered an immediate evacuation of travellers and airport staff from the surrounding sections of the terminal, bringing movement in the area to a halt and forcing many passengers to leave with little notice.
According to officials, the evacuation was carried out purely as a precaution. Public address announcements instructed people to exit the building calmly and put distance between themselves and the terminal. Witnesses said travellers were told to move as far away from the structure as possible while security personnel secured the area and began their assessment.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that it was investigating a suspicious item in the South Terminal, which led to the temporary shutdown of several Transportation Security Administration checkpoints. Screening areas serving concourses G, H and J, along with adjacent zones, were evacuated and closed while law enforcement followed standard safety and inspection procedures.
Miami International Airport acknowledged the disruption through social media updates, cautioning passengers about possible delays. Airport officials said concourses H and J were experiencing temporary changes to the security screening process and thanked travellers for their patience as the situation was addressed.
In another update, the airport said the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office was actively investigating the suspicious item and reiterated that TSA checkpoints for concourses G, H and J, as well as nearby areas, had been evacuated and closed. Passengers heading to the airport were advised to allow extra time due to the unfolding situation.
Flight operations were affected as security teams conducted thorough checks, though authorities did not immediately specify how long the closures would last. After completing the security sweep, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office later issued the all clear, allowing TSA checkpoints for concourses G, H and J and surrounding areas to reopen and operations to gradually return to normal.
The evacuation came only days after another security-related incident at Miami International Airport, which had already heightened anxiety among travellers. Earlier in the week, a routine boarding process escalated when a passenger made an inappropriate remark referencing a bomb while preparing to board an American Airlines flight to Houston.
That earlier incident occurred at gate D60-E after airline staff informed the passenger that his carry-on bag would need to be checked because of limited overhead bin space. During the exchange, the passenger reportedly made a sarcastic comment implying that a bomb would not fit inside the bag, triggering emergency protocols.
As a result, authorities evacuated the area and carried out a comprehensive security sweep, including the use of explosive detection dogs. No explosives were found in that case, but the incident added to heightened security concerns at the airport in the days leading up to Sunday’s evacuation.
