Despite ongoing trade disputes and policy disagreements that have periodically strained relations, the United States and India continue to reaffirm the depth of their longstanding partnership. On the occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day, US leaders highlighted the enduring strategic and democratic ties that bind the two nations, signalling continuity in the relationship even amid areas of friction.
US President Donald Trump, in a message shared by the American embassy in New Delhi, described India and the United States as partners connected by a “historic bond.” Extending his greetings, Trump congratulated the Indian government and people on the anniversary of the Republic, noting that the two countries, as the world’s oldest and largest democracies, share a relationship rooted in common values and democratic traditions, despite current challenges over trade, immigration and strategic issues.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed this sentiment, stressing the breadth of cooperation between Washington and New Delhi. He pointed to growing collaboration in defence, energy, critical minerals and emerging technologies, as well as sustained engagement through forums such as the Quad. Rubio said the US-India partnership continues to deliver tangible outcomes for both nations and the wider Indo-Pacific region, and expressed optimism about advancing shared objectives in the coming year.
The symbolic strength of bilateral ties was also visible at the Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path, which was attended by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Calling it an honour to witness the celebrations for the first time, Gor described the event as a powerful reflection of India’s constitutional and democratic spirit. He also highlighted the participation of US-made aircraft in the parade’s aerial display, describing it as a clear sign of the robust US-India strategic partnership.
These messages of goodwill came against the backdrop of recent tensions, including steep tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Indian goods, disputes over market access, and differences on immigration and geopolitical issues. Despite several rounds of negotiations failing to resolve all disagreements, the Republic Day exchanges underscored that both countries continue to value their historic partnership and remain committed to maintaining strong strategic and democratic links.
