Michael Reagan, the eldest son of former US President Ronald Reagan and a prominent conservative voice in his own right, has died at the age of 80. He was widely remembered for his unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting his father’s political philosophy and legacy, as well as for a life shaped by public service, media work, and philanthropy.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute announced his passing in a statement shared on the social media platform X, describing him as “a steadfast guardian of his father’s legacy.” The foundation said Michael Reagan lived with deep conviction and purpose, guided throughout his life by loyalty to the ideals and values championed by President Reagan.
His family confirmed that he passed away on Sunday, January 4, surrounded by loved ones. In a statement, his wife Colleen Reagan and his children Cameron Reagan and Ashley Reagan Dunster said they were heartbroken by the loss of a man who meant so much to his family and to those who knew him. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Michael Reagan was a familiar figure in conservative media circles. He was a contributor to the conservative television network Newsmax and hosted a long-running radio programme, The Michael Reagan Show, in which he regularly discussed politics, public policy, and cultural issues from a conservative perspective.
Born in 1945 to Irene Flaugher, Michael Reagan was adopted shortly after birth by Ronald Reagan and his first wife, actress Jane Wyman. He often spoke candidly about the complexities of growing up as an adopted child in a famous family. In his autobiographical works On the Outside Looking In and Twice Adopted, he reflected on a childhood that was sometimes difficult, his evolving relationship with his parents, and his personal journey of faith.
After studying at Arizona State University and Los Angeles Valley College, Reagan briefly pursued a career in acting, appearing in television series such as Falcon Crest. He later found his public voice through radio, spending nearly two decades as a conservative talk show host and commentator.
Writing was another important part of his public life. In addition to his autobiographies, he authored several books, including Lessons My Father Taught Me, published in 2016, in which he shared personal insights and moral lessons he said he learned growing up as the son of Ronald Reagan.
Beyond media and writing, Michael Reagan was deeply involved in charitable work. He raised funds for causes including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Statue of Liberty Restoration Fund, often using powerboat racing as a platform for fundraising. He also served on the advisory board of the Mixed Roots Foundation, which focuses on foster care and adoption in the United States and internationally.
Reagan also chaired the board of the John Douglas French Alzheimer’s Foundation for three years, an effort that carried personal significance, as his father died in 2004 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
In his later years, Michael Reagan served as president and chair of the Reagan Legacy Foundation, dedicating himself to safeguarding and promoting his father’s historical and political legacy. Ronald Reagan, one of the most influential conservative leaders in modern US history, is remembered for his efforts to reduce the role of government and for steering the United States through the final stages of the Cold War.
Through his advocacy, writing, broadcasting, and charitable work, Michael Reagan remained closely identified with those ideals throughout his life, earning recognition as a devoted son, a committed conservative, and a tireless custodian of the Reagan legacy.
