BJP Member of Parliament Soumitra Khan was detained by police on Friday after leading a protest outside the office of the Superintendent of Police in Bankura district, where he and other party members were demanding justice in connection with the murder of the brother of a BJP worker in the Indas area.
According to information available, Soumitra Khan had arrived at the Bankura SP office with the intention of meeting the Superintendent of Police to raise concerns over the handling of the murder case and to press for swift and decisive action. However, when he was informed that the SP would not meet him, the BJP MP expressed strong dissatisfaction and decided to stage a sit-in protest at the premises.
Accompanied by BJP workers and supporters, Khan sat near the main entrance of the SP office, raising slogans and reiterating demands for justice and accountability. The protesters insisted that their demonstration would continue until senior police officials addressed their concerns and assured concrete action in the case.
Police personnel repeatedly asked the demonstrators to disperse and clear the area, citing law and order concerns. Despite these requests, Soumitra Khan and the protesters refused to leave the spot, stating that they would not back down without a response from the authorities.
As the protest continued and the situation remained unresolved, the police moved in to remove the demonstrators. Officers forcibly lifted Soumitra Khan along with several BJP workers, escorted them into a prison van, and took them away from the SP office amid tense scenes.
The detained protesters were later taken to the Bankura Sadar police station, where Soumitra Khan and others were formally detained. The action followed the prolonged protest over the Indas murder case, which has emerged as a politically sensitive issue in the district, drawing sharp reactions from the opposition BJP.
