The Madras High Court on Thursday delivered a significant relief to the makers of Jana Nayagan, directing the Central Board of Film Certification to grant the film a U/A 16+ certificate. The ruling effectively cleared the way for the Vijay-starrer’s theatrical release after a prolonged and contentious delay in certification that had stalled its launch.
Justice P. T. Asha passed the order after hearing detailed submissions from both the film’s producers and the censor board. With the legal hurdle now removed, the producers are expected to announce a revised release date shortly. Industry sources suggest that the film could reach theatres within the next few days or be strategically released during the Pongal festival window on January 14 to maximise audience turnout.
In her observations, Justice Asha questioned the credibility of the objections raised by a censor board member, noting that the complaint appeared to have emerged as an afterthought rather than from a consistent or timely review process. She cautioned that entertaining such belated objections could set a troubling precedent and emphasised the importance of transparency, uniformity and accountability in the film certification mechanism.
The release of the film had been abruptly postponed after the CBFC failed to issue the certificate on time, citing objections over certain elements of the content. This unexpected delay forced the filmmakers to approach the High Court for urgent relief, even as advance bookings had already opened across India and in several overseas markets, creating widespread uncertainty among exhibitors and audiences.
The postponement reportedly resulted in heavy financial losses for distributors, particularly in international territories. Thousands of shows had been scheduled in advance, and with tickets already sold, theatres were compelled to cancel screenings and process mass refunds at the last minute. Trade analysts estimate that the disruption led to losses amounting to several crores of rupees, significantly impacting stakeholders across the distribution chain.
Beyond its commercial implications, Jana Nayagan carries particular significance in Vijay’s career, as it is widely seen as his final film before transitioning fully into politics. Vijay has earlier announced his decision to step away from cinema to focus on public life, making the film’s eventual release a landmark moment for his fans and a symbolic closing chapter in his long and influential film career.
